How to Convert and Upload an .mts or m2ts Video File
It seems like every camera has a different format, or file extension, so it can be tricky to keep up with all of them. With the WeddingMix app, we can handle whatever they upload from their smartphone, but not everyone has a smartphone.
Our optional upload link allows your guests to upload video (and photos) that were shot on any device via computer. Your guests may be shooting on DSLR cameras, Sony Bloggies, almost anything. At WeddingMix, we can handle most file formats, but there is always that exception. Many newer cameras shoot .mts or .mt2s files, which no sites are able to handle.
Sony, Olympus and Canon’s shoot in.mts, which is a beautiful format. It allows you to shoot with rich colors and smaller file sizes, however the video is actually broken into 2 files – the .mts (or .mt2s), which is a bunch of 1’s and 0’s, and the .txt file telling the computer what to do with that data. So, an .mts by itself doesn’t actually play anything, which is why websites can’t play those files.
You must first convert them into something usable. My go-to tool for video conversion has been Handbrake. It works on both PC and Mac and the price is right – free. Here are 3 simple steps to convert your video:
- Download Handbrake
- Access the mts files themselves
- Drop in and watch it do its thang
Here is a video tutorial showing you how to convert your files.
Be aware that in Mac OS 10.8 (Mountain Lion) the mts files are nested under an icon called “private” on the camera card. Mac users can export directly from Quicktime in OS Mountain Lion, but you must make sure to keep the file structure intact.
