How to Resist the Pushy Diamond Salesmen When Engagement Ring Shopping
Shopping for an engagement ring is overwhelming enough-let alone encountering pushy sales people. Here are some ways to tell you are being swindled into buying.
- If they put urgency on the purchase. If they don’t let you take your time to decide, it means that they don’t think you will buy it after thinking it through. This is especially true if they tell you that this is the only ring like that left and if you want it you need to buy it now. On the off chance that this statement is actually true, there is always a way to recreate that same ring.
- If they try to put you in an emotional state of mind instead of a “buying” state of mind, they’re selling you.
If you get into a situation at a jeweler with a sales person breathing down your neck, here are some tips.
- Don’t show emotion. If they can tell you love that 2 carat, round center stone, it’ll be easier for them to push you into it. They won’t be able to “sell” you on anything if you are polite but indifferent toward them.
- Don’t open up. They will use the information that you give them about your life to get you to buy something. Good salesmen know that if they can get you to picture the object in your life, you’re more likely to buy it. Choose your words carefully so that they have less ammunition when they get desperate.
- Don’t lie simply to be polite. If you know you don’t want something, be honest and say no. Too often people get pushed around because they are trying to be nice to the salesperson. If they show you something and you don’t like it, tell them that directly instead of hinting timidly at what you want. This is your purchase, not theirs.
- Don’t go unprepared. Before you even put yourself in the situation, learn about diamonds, settings, where you want to compromise for price and where you don’t. If you know the average cost of things beforehand, and make a budget, you’ll know as soon as you go into a store what you can afford to look at and what you can’t.
If you feel pressured in any store you can always take your business somewhere else. There are plenty of jewelers out there, and a pushy salesperson with shady sales technique does not deserve to be rewarded with a sale anyway.
