Double Rainbow Unicorn Wedding Extravaganza | Rick + Monica’s Motivational Monday
If you’re a DIY lover — get ready for your jaw to drop. From constructing their own DIY photo booth and crowdsourced their own spiffy wedding invitations, Rick and Monica’s wedding planning adventure has set a new bar for DIY wedding awesomeness! Oh, and did I mention this is wedding will be a 3D experience — of dinner, drinks, and dancing!
One of the great things about a wedding is that you get to know your future-spouse even better. Going through all of the planning has lead to some stress, but a lot of fun moments as well. What was also amazing was (once we decided that we would do a full wedding) was that our thoughts and feelings about what we wanted were so in-tune. The biggest issue was that while we aren’t against traditional weddings, some of the tweaks to things we wanted (invitations, cake, etc…) were just not easily available, or so we thought.
For example, I came up with the idea for a really cool wedding invitation that told a story in pictures, there are no pre-made templates for that! Unfortunately, like everyone else, our budget is a big priority so we couldn’t just hire a professional artist/photographer to create our vision. We did some research and then (light-bulb moment!) we found a site that you could freelance projects like this. We had a good friend take the pictures, we uploaded them to the site and created a contest to see who could give us our dream invitations. This was crowd-sourcing at it’s finest!! During the contest we gave hints on what we liked and who we thought was doing the best and in the end there was one that was amazing and he won the contest! The best thing is the compliments that we keep getting from them, everyone from the printer to the wedding cake place have mentioned how much they like them. Although we are probably biased, I don’t think anyone has ever made a better DIY invitation.
Another way we decided to go DIY is when we saw that really cool video of the slow motion booth. While there are a lot of places to rent photo booths, there aren’t that many for slow motion and the ones we did find were cost prohibitive. So, what is a good bride to do but get her groom to build one! After a little bit of research we found several cameras on the market that were inexpensive and could record the video just right (at least 120fps). At that point it was just a matter of building the booth. We practiced a bit with it and need to change the black sheets to white but other than that, we’ve had a ton of fun with it. Once things settle down after the honeymoon we hope to document the project and put it online so that everyone can have as exciting of a time as we’ve had!
