Multi-Cultural Marvel Comic Wedding Planning | Rashmi + Drew
This amazing couple had me hooked from the moment they mention the Marvel Comic wedding inspiration they wanted for their big day. Check out August bride-to-be Rashmi’s inspirational story on planning a wedding full of geekery, culture, and most of all, LOVE!
Drew proposed to me at a big birthday bash he threw with all of my closest friends and family watching. When the time came to cut the cake and sing happy birthday, he concluded the song by making a beautiful speech about what we mean to each other, and then he got down on one knee!
Although his proposal left me elated to be able to spend the rest of my life with my best friend, this “wedding” business had my head spinning with questions that I felt like I should have already answered.
You see, I have never been, and still am not, the type of chick to dream about what kind of wedding she’s always wanted. When other girls were dreaming up how they wanted their hair done on their big day, I was still at a loss as to how I wanted it done the next morning (still am, actually).
Furthermore, my family is Indian in ethnicity and Hindu in spirituality, which means that a wedding includes a lot of traditions and customs that are pretty elaborate! Despite this, I grew up immersed in American-Western culture, with my ethnicity and family’s cultural background taking a significant backseat in my life. It’s for that reason that, as an individual, I identify myself somewhere in limbo: somehow in both cultures, and in neither at the same time. Drew’s background was very similar, as he is of Mexican descent, but is American born through and through.
If you’re reading this blog, you probably already know this inevitable fact about being a bride: it seems like mere minutes after being proposed to, a bride is expected to be already pre-loaded with an inordinate amount of answers to wedding planning questions: “Do you have a date yet?”, “What kind of dress do you want?”, “Where will the wedding be held?”, “What kind of food will there be?”, etc. Poor Drew got asked these types of questions a lot as well, and he felt very similar to the way I was feeling!
We were perplexed, to say the least. We didn’t exactly know what we wanted our wedding day to look like, but at the same time we knew we didn’t want a cliche wedding! Clearly, I had some brainstorming to do. So I did some thinking, the usual internet-browsing and pinning, and I adopted and abandoned more ideas than I can count.
Despite all these questions, our final decisions ended up coming from ONE important question: Instead of asking how I wanted our wedding day to look, I asked myself how we would want our MARRIAGE to look.
My answer: I want it to be honest, loving, and brave. I want to have our own unique culture as a couple, not necessarily as two people from Mexican and Indian descent. I want it to be FUN. I want it to be geeky and representative of us both, with plenty of comic books and cartoons and movies and design. So on our wedding day, we will follow suit!
There will be an Indian-fusion ceremony, a lot of comic book references, and a CMYK color scheme! We will be utilizing Instagram and Weddingmix apps to our full advantage to help out with documenting our day. I am designing all the invitations and other stationery myself, and made sure our website is baller as well! We will show everyone that we are a unique pair, and that our marriage is going to be a whole lot of fun!
So that’s how we came up with our Indian-fusion Marvel Comic-themed multi-cultural multi-media wedding! Try saying that ten-times fast. We realized that, even though our big day is important, it’s still just one day. One day out of forever. So instead of sweating the small stuff, I’m choosing to look forward to forever with my future superhero husband, starting August 23rd!
