Planning a wedding fused with two different cultures is tough. Telling your very indian family that you’d like to have a “fusion” wedding is a bit like trying to convince your dog that a bath is fun – it’s a concept so mind-boggling that it doesn’t register in existence to them. Furthermore, adding on that you’d also like your reception to be Marvel comic book-themed reveals that their reactions are very similar to the previously-mentioned dog: glazed-over denial, a lot of whining, and possibly some drool. That being said, a little whining and drool never stopped me from taking care of my dog, and it won’t stop me from planning an epicly fun party!
Operation MoFo (Marvel-comics Fun) begins as most weddings begin: with grand plans of DIY glory! Having a themed wedding is more about decor than anything else, and the best way to make sure it looks exactly perfect is to just do it yourself! For our Marvel decor, we’ve procured projects such as a cake table decorated with superhero wedding issues, decoupaged table numbers with wedding issue panel art, and a photo booth with props worthy of a cosplay contest.
Phase 2 of Operation MoFo involves remembering our vision. Although the definition of “fusion” is the blending of two things that are otherwise different into one thing, our wedding isn’t just about an Indian girl marrying a Mexican boy. While we created a “fusion” ceremony, blending Indian customs with a civil ring ceremony, complete with a bridal party processional and music, our union is about molding our lives together in order to create a bond that is strong, loving, brave, and FUN. Our union is independent of our respective ethnicities and cultures.
Phase 3: Execute FUN. Scavenge the best comic book art from neighborhood comic book stores. Meet interesting cos-players and bronies along the way. Spray paint. Sprinkle glitter. Attend comic-cons. Every time something gets too serious or stressful, make an inappropriate noise and move on laughing. See every craft & antique store as a possibility.
Phase 4: Be infectious. Don’t be stingy with the fun. Find out what sounds like fun to your friends and family (AKA your guests!!) and make it a reality! Have them request songs in your invitation RSVP’s. Take them out shopping for their wedding clothes. Show them the cute shoes you just covered in glitter, and tell them how you totally got them on ebay for $12. And those slack-jawed-with-confusion family members? They’ll be having too much fun to remember how weird they thought your wedding ideas were in the first place.
