How to Use a Selfie Stick at a Wedding Without Being a Jerk
Wedding selfie sticks have gotten a bad rap as a silly fad…
But can we just stop for a second to appreciate how seriously perfect they are for capturing a wedding?
When used properly, they can give you some of the best photos you’ve ever taken!
That’s especially true at big events like weddings, where you have tons of people you love in one room, an occasion that doesn’t come along too often. When they do happen, you want to snap as many memorable pictures as you can with as many of your favorite folks as possible. That’s there the selfie stick is indispensable.
But before you name yourself the master of the wedding selfie stick, you should get our tips on how to use a selfie stick responsibly and respectfully.
1. DON’T Use it During the Ceremony
The wedding selfie stick is awesome for capturing reception fun — but the actual wedding ceremony is a sacred time that should be treated with gloves. You may feel the need to capture as much of it as possible with your own digital camera, but sticking a selfie stick into the aisle during the bride’s procession is absolutely not OK.
The best plan is just to sit back, enjoy the moment, and let the pro document the proceedings — and use the
2. DO Get Amazing Wedding Group Selfies
Perhaps we should rename the selfie stick the “Groupie Stick” because that’s what it’s best used for – perfect for giving you more reach for a truly epic group selfie.
Given the fact that weddings are a one-time-only occasion where all your friends and family are celebrating together in one spot, it’s the optimal time to get priceless group pictures that you’ll treasure for years to come.
Depending on the size of the wedding, you may even be able to capture the wedding party and all of the guests in one, legendary picture!
3. DON’T Get in the Way of the Photographer
This is important: NEVER cost of the shots that the bride and groom paid big bucks for. Remember that it’s their job to capture the best moments flawlessly, so the last thing you want to do is prevent that with the wedding selfie stick.
Be aware of where the photographer is and when they’re trying to get a good shot. Go a step further and let them know they should feel free to tell you to move if you’re ever in their way.
4. DO Capture Magic on the Dance floor
It can be tough to really catch the hilarity and fun of a wedding dance floor from where you’re standing – you’ve got the college roommate crew in one corner doing a choreographed dance they made up a decade ago, grandma busting moves on that side and the flower girls cutting a rug with the best man over there. The only way you’ll ever possibly be able to get that all in one magnificent picture is to grab your selfie stick, extend it all the way, hold it way up high and snap.
5. DON’T Get Selfie-ish
There’s no doubt that you can get some truly unique and share-worthy pictures with a selfie stick, so don’t hesitate to bring yours along and get selfie snapping. But don’t get so crazy with it that you forget to enjoy yourself and participate in the action.
The bride and groom will be psyched to have your cool photos, but they won’t be so psyched if your cool gadget distracts from their special day.
6. DO Get the Bride & Groom in on the Selfie Stick Fun!
Remember that the bride and groom are the stars of the day, so you’ll do well to involve them in your wedding selfie stick shenanigans. They may even want to appropriate it for a bit to take a series of selfies with various groups who are in attendance: all the cousins, the high school friend group, the siblings, etc.
While the photographer will get formal group shots, a self-taken version will undoubtedly have show another side of personality and emotion from your wedding day. You could even upload that awesome selfie to the WeddingMix app to be included in your super fun, affordable wedding video!
