Advice from the bride and groom!

1. What part of your wedding planning are you most proud of?

I did a lot of the planning myself, which helped me keep it simple. I kept everything very organized, down to the smallest detail, and it helped everything flow well on the day of, and through the week/weekend leading up to it. We also started planning right away… we knew we wanted to get married in June, and we got engaged in June, so we hit the ground running. We had all our vendors lined up within 1-2 months, so then we could sit back and focus on all the small stuff over the next 10-11 months.

2. Where did you get married?

We got married at Rapids Theatre in Niagara Falls, NY. It was a really fun venue, and no one on our guest list had been there for a wedding before, so it made it more unique. That is what we were going for. And everyone said they loved it!

3. Why was using WeddingMix appealing for your big day?

We weren’t going to do a wedding video at first, just photos. And about 6 months before the wedding, we changed our minds. But at that point, we were well into our budget, and didn’t have a lot of extra funds for a videographer (would have been another $2000 or so). A friend told me about WeddingMix, so I checked it out.

It’s not a perfect system by any means, relying on family and friends to video when they want to enjoy the moment. What we liked about it though, is that it is more personal. It’s not a stylized video, it’s us, our family, and our friends living in the moment. And I think we were able to capture more of the fun and excitement, that a regular videographer might not have been able to.

4. What were the most important moments that WeddingMix was able to capture on your special day?

The biggest part for us was making sure we got the ceremony. We had some family/friends who weren’t able to make it, so we will be able to share that with them. Along with reliving it for ourselves. But we were also able to get the dances and speeches of course, the things you can’t always remember. My favorite is all the dancing… the funny stuff happens later in the night when there are less people, no photographers, and you are several drinks in.

5. What is your top wedding budget tip(s)?

If you are comfortable, the best thing is to do a lot of things yourself and keep them simple. People care the most about the dress, the food, and the music… so spend the most of those things, and less on everything else. Nobody really pays attention to the favors, the centerpieces, the flowers. We were lucky we had some help from family… my husband’s grandmother made our centerpieces and my bridesmaid bouquets (babies breath and greens… they were gorgeous), which helped out a lot too.

Recruit people who like to do crafts. We also let people take the centerpieces home… they were lanterns with fairy lights. Etsy is a life saver for do-it-yourself as well. You can buy anything on there.., my favorites were editable templates for our table numbers, place cards, and wine bottle labels… each one was $5-10 to buy and then I would just take it to a printing shop like UPS… under $50 for everything. Takes a little extra time, but worth it.

Just keep yourself organized as you go along, and do things a little at a time, so you don’t get swamped at the end. We also kept a budget worksheet in Excel to track all the expenses.
