Anyone can tell from our save-the-date that we don’t take ourselves too seriously, and our wedding was no exception. We had one simple goal: make sure everyone had a great time. We knew that years later our guests would probably not remember much about the decorations, they would remember whether or not they had fun. So when our big day finally came, we achieved our goal and everyone had a blast.
Like true Southern Californians, we had our ceremony on the beach in Santa Barbara, CA on September 13, 2013 (yes, Friday the 13th). The weather was perfect and we walked down the aisle as the sun was setting to the mellow tunes of a steel drum. My former college speech coach and close friend officiated the ceremony and kept everyone laughing with fun and light-hearted remarks about us, including how Ryan had at one point suggested that we use his high school graduation ring as his wedding ring, just to be efficient and cost-effective. After the “I dos” our guests threw beach balls at us as we walked back down the aisle.
Our reception continued the fun with great music, food and drinks. We kept everyone on the dance floor the whole night with a mix of 90s hip hop and 80s hair band music – two of our favorite genres. We had a great staff and bartenders that made sure our guests were well taken care of and the drinks were flowing the whole night. When it came time to cut the cake, I didn’t hold back (to no one’s surprise) and smashed as much cake as I possibly could in Ryan’s face. At the end of the night, we had a party bus come pick up a big group of our guests and took us to a local bar to continue the party. We couldn’t have asked for a better night!
