Fun Wedding In Cabo San Lucas, Mexico
Who doesn’t love a destination wedding? The surf, the sand, the…groom skydiving into the ceremony? Alicea and Arvin’s incredible wedding is too fun to miss!
1. What part of your wedding planning are you most proud of?
We had one vision for our wedding: something elegant, simple, and most importantly fun! Especially coming from different cultural and religious backgrounds, we did not want the fuss of formality and kept true to our wish for the wedding to be all about love and celebration. We decided the perfect place would be right on the beach at sunset in one of our favorite places: Mexico!
Like any wedding, there was lots of stress, but we tried to keep the focus on creating great memories. We were proud that the wedding was not just one event. Because our parents could not attend, we honored them by holding a legal ceremony on Arvin’s birthday, followed by a special Hindu blessing, before leaving for Mexico.
Our hope with having a destination wedding was that our family and friends would have a great adventure. They were tasked with enjoying endless pooltime, beachtime, outtings and drinks and food. We held a welcome cocktail hour the night before the wedding for guests to meet one another, followed by a gentlemen’s drink up and a ladies’ mendhi party for the women to get traditional henna tattoes.
The big day was on my birthday and consisted of guests being greeted on the beach with tequila, mariachi music, and maracas in bags made of sari silk. Guests waited in great anticipation for the groom’s arrival, who is infamous for being late. I tried my best to cover for his distinct absence and play the part of a concerned bride, all the while knowing the guests were in for a big surprise. The ceremony setup was beautiful, but guests took notice of a huge and out of place red flag right next to it. Guests even urged staff to move it, thinking it would be an upsetting mistake.
I will never forget standing up the stairs from the ceremony with my brother about to walk me down the aisle. Arvin’s brother kept nervously looking around for Arvin and then looked at me with his hands up in frustration to ask where he was. Right about then, there was a distant sound of an airplane. Only the staff and I knew what this meant. Moments later, guests noticed a colorful parachute up above with someone waving and everyone erupted into cheers as they realized the groom had finally made it. By then, tons of hotel guests had also gathered around to make sense of what was happening. And as Arvin landed on the beach right next to the giant red flag, his guiding point, the airplane from which he jumped flew by over the huge crashing waves to salute the big day. I will always remember the excitement everyone had in that moment, it was a true testament to what weddings and marriage are all about: unexpected bliss that transports you into the moment and nowhere else.
2. Where did you get married?
The beautiful Sandos Finisterra Resort in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.
The fiesta after the ceremony was held on a mountaintop terrace with the most gorgeous views of Cabo. We did away with division and assigned seating and had one long table for everyone to eat, drink, and be merry together. We kept the decorations simple and complementary of the amazing surroundings and Mexican tile floor. The theme was described as “haute Mexican desert with a nod to nautical”. While we decided against formal toasts, guests created their own impromptu passing of the mic around the table where we heard such heartfelt and lovely words accompanied by lots of tears of joy.

3. Why was using WeddingMix appealing for your big day?
We had a limited budget and decided to forego a professional videographer. We were thrilled when we learned about WeddingMix as an affordable alternative. We wanted an interactive and fun wedding and WeddingMix certainly added to that. It gave guests an active role in capturing such great moments. It was awesome to experience the wedding and adventures from all of our guests’ perspectives!
4. What special moments from your wedding do you want to remember forever?
The skydive, of course 🙂 And also, all the beautiful scenery, decor, and people that helped create the special day.
Tequila bottles adorned the table with the cliche note: “Trust me, you can dance! Love, Tequila” and that we did! Every single person, kids included, danced the night away to a mix of Indian, Spanish, and Reggae music. It was an absolute blast and that is exactly what we had hoped for 🙂
5. How did WeddingMix help capture those moments?
It created a tool to encourage guests to document their experience, make use of social media, and have a platform to collect all of the memories!
