Real advice from the Bride & Groom!

1. What part of your wedding planning are you most proud of?

That I truly did so much of the planning on my own, and then our community put all those plans into action … we didn’t hire a planner or even day-of coordinator, and my maid of honor (sister) and bridesmaids were all hours away, as was my mom, so other than receiving their moral support, I basically planned the three-day event from start-to-finish. My then-fiance (now husband) was also extremely busy finishing his Master’s degree, writing his thesis and student teaching, on top of working 2 part-time jobs, so he gave me a lot of leeway to make decisions for our big day. It was very overwhelming at times, but everything came together so well that weekend and I was blown away by all the hardwork and support put in by all our friends and family to set up, tear-down, and make sure everything ran smoothly in between the two. That element really made it feel like a community effort, and made up 100-fold for the times when I felt like I was all on my own during the months of planning. What was really special was how all of our loved ones pitched in to help make our carefully crafted vision a beautiful reality.

The Lily Pad Property at Lydia Mountain in Stanardsville, Virginia.

3. Why was using WeddingMix appealing for your big day?

I had priced out videography services from a number of local vendors, and we just couldn’t justify spending thousands on making a video of our wedding, even though I really wanted one as a record of the event. I loved that we could capture more of the festivities for less with WeddingMix, by inviting our friends and family to record their experiences even coming to and from the wedding venue. I also new I had really awesome, talented and detail-oriented friends who I could count on to make sure they capture the most important moments of the ceremony and reception.

4. What were the most important moments that WeddingMix was able to capture on your special day?

Our ceremony– of which the two most important moments in my mind were the vows my husband and I said to each other, as well as the community vows we included. We wrote our own ceremony completely, and one thing that I was so happy to incorporate was the opportunity for everyone bearing witness to our marriage to voice their support for our union. It went like this:

And in turn, we, their community of friends and family, have a responsibility to the bride and groom. By our steadfast care, respect, and love, we can support their marriage and the new family they are creating today.

The moment I heard all of our closest friends and relatives shout out in unison that they would support my husband and I in our journey ahead, I couldn’t hold back the tears of joy! It was such an inspiring moment of love and confidence in our decision to spend the rest of our lives together.

5. What is your top wedding budget tip(s)?

Don’t make the mistake we did of thinking if we did a largely DIY, outdoor affair, we could save money! Having your wedding at a banquet hall or hotel that regularly holds weddings will probably mean major savings in all, because you don’t need to buy separate services or rent out all your equipment… however, I loved that using a ‘clean slate’ gave us a lot of freedom to create the exact kind of atmosphere that we wanted.

Also, don’t be afraid to ask your friends/relatives to help do things you know they will be good at. We had one good friend officiate our wedding, another really close friend and her husband manage the self-serve bar, our mom coordinate the next-day brunch, our neighbors’ band play at a big-time “friend discount,” and two other close friends of ours play the role of videographers using WeddingMix!

6. What was your budget?

For 100 guests, our wedding costs were around $20,000. This included costs for the rehearsal dinner, accommodations for the wedding party, and food and drink for the next-day brunch.
