Real advice from the Bride & Groom!

1. What part of your wedding planning are you most proud of?

I am a DIY-er by nature and I knew that my wedding would be a DIY-affair. I am so fortunate to have so many crafty and creative ladies in my life that helped make my Pinterest dreams become a reality. A lot of love (and sometimes a few tears) went into creating almost every aspect of my wedding. My centerpieces were created using glass vases gathered over months from local thrift stores, flowers that my mother and I cut from a local cut-your-own flower field, and wire numbers handcrafted by my mother. My mother created a program board for the wedding, the Mr. & Mrs. signs for the sweetheart table, along with all of the chalkboard signs used for the favor table, memorial table, and photo booth. I made the favors (his & her favorite snack bags) by hand while binge watching ‘Friends from College’ on Netflix. This wedding was truly a labor of love.

We were able to incorporate some really special and sentimental details into our day. My parents anniversary is 2 days after our wedding and my grandmothers birthday was the day of our wedding. At my parents wedding, they got my grandmother a small cake for her birthday. We made sure to celebrate my grandmothers birthday by singing ‘Happy Birthday’ to her at the reception. My mother had the cake cutter that her and my father used at their wedding, which was engraved with their initials, engraved with our initials and we used that to cut our cake. The tablecloth on the cake table was the tablecloth that my grandmother embroidered for my parents for their wedding.

2. Where did you get married?

We got married in Malvern, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia. Our venue had an old stone farmhouse that was the home of the first school in Chester County. The farmhouse was purchased by a local theater and turned into a restaurant and wedding venue. There is a ballroom and ceremony space attached to the Farmhouse. Our ceremony and reception were both at this site. There is a beautiful outdoor wedding space that we were, unfortunately, unable to use due to rain on our wedding day. Our wedding guests were all given a complimentary ticket to see a show at the theater, which was a really unique favor.

3. Why was using WeddingMix appealing for your big day?

I knew that we were on a budget and I didn’t want a ‘traditional’ wedding video. I felt like the traditional videographer route would be too costly for something that I wouldn’t really watch from start to finish more than a handful of times. However, I felt like I would regret not having some sort of video of the day. When I came across WeddingMix on Pinterest, I was thrilled. It was exactly what I was looking for in terms of pricing and video length. I felt like a 10 minute video would be perfect to capture all the memories of that day. One of the added bonuses that I fell in love with after the wedding was having all of the photos and taken by my guests that I could download and keep.

4. What were the most important moments that WeddingMix was able to capture on your special day?

Going into the wedding, the most important moment that I wanted captured was the ceremony. My brother got ordained in order to officiate our wedding and I wanted to be sure that we captured the ceremony, vows, and the kiss. We were able to use a Go-Pro camera that we already owned to be sure we had a good angle and appropriate sound. I didn’t want to leave this aspect up of filming up to my guests, in case they were too far away to capture sound. We also wanted to capture the usual things, like the first dance, the toasts, father/daughter/mother son dances, the cake cutting, and the sparkler exit.

What I did not anticipate were how many special moments popped up during the wedding that I did not anticipate but am so glad were captured by family and loved ones. Who would of predicted that my brother would start of the ceremony by taking a selfie at the alter or the coming together of both families dancing in a big circle to ‘Jersey Girl” by Bruce Springsteen. When I began to look through the videos people uploaded, I got to see the advice given to us and so many moments that I didn’t even know happened. And best of all, I got to see all of the things that I had on my list from multiple perspectives. Had I used a traditional videographer, I would have only had one view of all the big moments. Seeing your day thought the eyes of everyone who attended is amazing. I could not be happier with the moments that were captured. I will admit that I was nervous that people might not film or might not use the app but the fact that they could used their regular camera and upload things later made things so simple. We got so much more than I anticipated!

5. What is your top wedding budget tip(s)?

DIY it if you can. If you are not blessed with the crafty gene, there are things that you can DIY that don’t require a high level of skill. For me, the invitations, escort cards, and other paper items that people end up throwing away was an easy way to save hundreds of dollars. I purchased a wedding invitation kit and made beautiful invitations at a fraction of the cost I would have paid ordering them. Be smart and use 50% off coupons at craft stores when you purchase things. I invested a bit more time buying things one at a time or having friends come with me to buy things. If you have the time, it helped keep me on budget.

Another thing I did was speak with the venue. Their wedding packages were out of my budget. I was able to talk with them about what my budget was and we were able to do things like have a beer and wine bar instead of a full bar and have cold appetizer stations instead of passed appetizers that ended up saving me $30 per person. If you love the venue, don’t be afraid to ask how you can reduce costs. The worst thing they can do is say no. Our wedding was 6 months (-1 day) from when we got engaged. We got married on the Saturday over Labor Day weekend and so since we booked late compared to many brides who have longer engagements, I think we were able to get a better deal because the venue didn’t want risk not having an event that day.

We also took a chance with a photographer who was inexperienced with weddings. It is a bit of a risk trusting the most important day of your life to someone who does not have a lot of experience but we felt it was a risk worth taking. My mother pushed us to take the risk, by telling us that realistically, we are going to hang up a handful of photos in our house. If you feel confident that the photographer can take good photos, chances are that during the 8 hours they are there, they will take at least a handful of photos you will love. We found our photographer on Facebook when I posted a request for help finding an affordable photographer. Things worked out well for us because we were looking for something affordable and she (and her boyfriend) were looking to use the photos to building up their wedding photographer business.
